Philippine authorities raised the alert level on Mount Mayon on Monday, after the country's most active volcano exploded, spewing a plume of ash, lava fragments and steam into the air.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level to four on a scale of five, warning that a "hazardous eruption" may be imminent, even within hours or days. Authorities also expanded the danger zone around the volcano to a radius of eight kilometres (five miles).
