Maldives government says it quelled a coup after declaring a state of emergency

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen's administration says it stopped a coup a day after declaring a state of emergency and arresting opposition figures including two supreme judges. The move was quickly followed by the three remaining court justices reversing the decision to drop charges against nine opposition figures.

While the government seemed in control on Tuesday, it was unclear whether the political crisis was over as, on the same day, an exiled former president urged India to send a military backed envoy to release Maldivian political prisoners.
