Maldives president declares emergency, arrests judges

An opposition leader and two Supreme Court judges in the Maldives have been arrested.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has allied himself with the opposition, was detained at his home, while the Chief Justice and a judge were also arrested.

The president has declared a 15-day state of emergency and the military is now in charge of the parliament.
