A memorial service is held in Voronezh on Thursday, February 8, in honour of Hero of the Russian Federation Major Roman Filipov, who died in Syria last week.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, Filipov's jet was "attacked with a short-range man-portable air defence system (MANPADS/MPADS) while flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone to monitor a ceasefire."

He was forced to eject from the aircraft. The wounded pilot blew himself up with a grenade as several dozen militants closed in on his position. The 33-year-old pilot was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, the Kremlin’s highest honour.
