Russian Sukhoi fighter jet shot down in Syria's Idlib

A Russian warplane has been shot down over Syria's northwestern Idlib province.

Russia's defence ministry says the pilot of the Sukhoi fighter jet managed to eject, but was killed in a subsequent ground fight near the town of Saraqeb.

Russian military has retaliated killing 30 fighters in the area, in dozens of air strikes.

There has been heavy fighting in Idlib for weeks. The UN says around 100,000 civilians have been displaced.

There is confusion over who exactly shot down the plane. A group formerly linked to al-Qaeda says it did it.

Al Jazeera's sources in Turkey suggest both the Turks and the Russians are blaming a moderate group, backed by the US.

Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker reports from the Turkey-Syria border.
