Afghanistan: Suicide bomb kills 26 during Persian New Year celebration

A suicide bombing left at least 26 people dead and dozens more injured on Wednesday, as Kabul celebrated the Nowruz holiday, marking the Persian New Year.

The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast rocked the Afghan capital after a suicide bomber reportedly detonated himself near the Ali Abad hospital and Kabul University.

According to Afghan Interior Ministry's spokesperson Najib Danesh, the bomber is believed to have intended to reach the Kart-e Sakhi shrine in the area but was barred from getting closer to it by police checkpoints.
