Cab drivers held a large-scale taxi blockade in Brussels on Tuesday to protest against Uber and other ride-sharing app services.

Taxis from France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium blocked the streets of Brussels and the airport during the protest. The taxis are occupying different parts within the inner ring of the city, including in and around the European Quarter, where EU institutions are located.

Demonstrators oppose proposals that foresee rival transport companies such as Uber receiving the same status as taxi ranks in the Belgian capital.

The protest began at 5 am local time and consisted of go-slow convoys and filters at busy road junctions. It also heavily affected the motorways entering the city.
