France pays tribute to police officer who took the place of a hostage during supermarket siege

France will pay a national tribute to the police officer who voluntarily took the place of a hostage during Friday’s supermarket siege in the southwestern town of Trebes. Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame offered himself unarmed to the attacker in exchange for the hostage and managed to leave his phone nearby with an open line so that police could hear the situation inside the supermarket. The 44-year-old was shot in the neck by the gunman and died later in the hospital. French President Emmanuel Macron “decided that a national tribute would be organized in honor of Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame who sacrificed his life to protect our fellow citizens.”
