The Iraq Invasion: 'short war' led to protracted conflict

A decade and a half ago, the US-led "coalition of the willing", along with Britain, invaded Iraq without UN authorization to topple then President Saddam Hussein and get rid of the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) they said were in his possession. Those weapons were never found. The invasion and subsequent years of occupation tore the country apart, leaving hundreds of thousands of people dead. Why has something pitched as a 'short war' led to a years-long conflict?
