France: Eco-activists put up a fight as authorities evacuate ZAD squats

Clashes erupted between squatters and eco-activists of ZAD (Zone a Defendre/Zone to Defend) and police officers during the evacuation by French authorities on Tuesday in Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

The activists were driven back by a heavy firing of tear gas by riot police as they attempted to remain on the site. Some of the activists wore gas masks or other facial coverings to protect themselves from the tear gas. During the eviction a few activists were detained.

The ZAD activists initially came together in 2008 to protest against a proposed airport in Nantes.

The plan was recently abandoned, however it is estimated that up to 200 activists remained at the site and refused to leave it, despite evacuation orders and forced eviction threats.
